The Supreme Court yesterday made several directions with regard to the sound amplification including a total ban on using amplifiers between 10.00 p.m. and 6.00 a.m. and ordered the immediate cancellation of the permits issued by the police to use loudspeakers.

This order was made by the Supreme Court in a judgment to an application filed in the Supreme Court by the office bearers of the Weligama Mosque that they are being denied to use loud speakers.

The judgment delivered by the bench of 5 judges stated that loud speakers could be used from 6.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. without any disturbance to the public and if loud speakers should be an important item during the banned hours, a special permission should be obtained from the closest court. Further the Supreme Court made an order to send the circular in this regard to all the police stations, GAs and Pradesa Sabaas.
