Commonwealth To Be Informed Regarding Govt’s Move To Prevent General From Attending Sessions In Nairobi
The Opposition has decided to inform the Commonwealth regarding withholding permission for Gen. Fonseka to participate at the sessions of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association to be held in Nairobi in Kenya.
It had been proposed by the opposition to send Gen. Fonseka to this conference as the representative of Sri Lanka's parliament. The speaker had also given the approval.
However, the government adopted a proposal in Sri Lankan parliamentary executive committee of Common Wealth Parliamentary Union a few days back to prevent Gen. Fonseka from attending this conference. The opposition claims it is a violation of privileges of a parliamentary member. This is also the first incident for adopting such a proposal against a parliamentary member
