It had been proposed by the opposition to send Gen. Fonseka to this conference
as the representative of Sri Lanka's parliament. The speaker had also given the
approval.
However, the government adopted a proposal in Sri Lankan parliamentary executive
committee of Common Wealth Parliamentary Union a few days back to prevent Gen.
Fonseka from attending this conference. The opposition claims it is a violation
of privileges of a parliamentary member. This is also the first incident for
adopting such a proposal against a parliamentary member
