Jithmie creates upset at SSC Open

Sir Lanka’s women’s tennis champion Jithmie Jayawickrema who was seeded number two at the SSC Open tennis championship, created an upset when she defeated the number one seed Nilupul Goonesekera in the women’s open singles final on Saturday.

This tournament offered grand cash prizes and was sponsored by Citi Bank, ABC Insurance and Dimo Motors.

Jurgen Wreeth, Ambassador for the Federal Republic of Germany was the chief guest.

Men’s Open singles: Harshana Godamanne beat Sankha Athukorale 6-2, 6-1.

Women’s Open singles: Jithmie Jayawickrema beat Nilupul Goonasekera 6-3, 3-0 (rtd)

Women’s doubles; Jithmie Jayawickrema and Mahesha Seneviratne beat Thavindra Ekanayake and Amritha Muttiah 6-3, 6-1.

Mixed doubles: Jithmie Jayawickrema and Rajiv Rajapaksa beat Thavindra Ekanayake and Harshana Godamanne 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Boys under 18 singles: Dinusha Wijesuriya beat Udith Wickremasinghe 7-6 (5), 4-6, 1-0 (rtd).

Girls under 18: Jithmie Jayawickrema beat Nilupul Goonasekera 6-4, 6-3.

Girl’s under-14: Amritha Muttiah beat Shenelle Abeysekera 6-2, 6-1.
