President Mahinda Rajapakse has instructed the officials concerned to open the A 9 road as a one-time measure to transport essential goods for the people in the Jaffna peninsula.

The media release of the presidential secretariat last night 19.11.2006 states that the President has directed relevant government authorities to take all possible steps to ensure adequate supplies of food and other essential goods are sent to Jaffna for the use of civilians in the Jaffna peninsula. Since the A 9 road could not be used for security reasons the government has been using sea transport to deliver the essential food items. But there is a shortage of food items in Jaffna. Due to present inclement weather, sea transport is also not possible. Hence the President has directed the government authorities to make arrangement to transport essential goods using the A 9 as a one- time measure. The Essential Services Commission is making arrangements for this purpose.

But as usual the LTTE, which is always self-centered, has rejected the offer. Although the LTTE says it is fighting for the Tamils, it was never, has never or will ever be concerned about the welfare of the Tamil people. Political observers wonder as to when the Tamils will awaken to this reality and see the true colours of the LTTE. That would be the day the Tamils will be fully liberated, they said.
