4800 km s of road to be reconstructed under Eastern reawakening plan

Several roads are to be reconstructed under the accelerated development plan under the Eastern Reawakening scheme. Accordingly, 4800 kms. of road will be under taken for reconstruction. The roads in Amparai, Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts come under this development scheme.

 

The Asian Development bank, World Bank, Spain, Japanese International Solidarity organisation and Saudi Fund are providing the necessary funds.

 

Bridges in Verugal, Pidavaikaddu, Yan Oya in the Trincomalee district also would be renovated under the scheme. Resettlement projects, Housing schemes are undertaken under this scheme and infrastructure facilities are also included.

 

Meanwhile, works pertaining to distribution of electricity along A5 main highway in the Batticaloa district are in progress as a prior arrangement to open the road for public use. Electrical Superintendent Dhayaparan confirmed that electricity to a 30-mile long strip of the main road from Chenkalady to Unnichchai had already been provided.

 

Meanwhile, the Highways Development Authority has already renovated the stretch of A5 highway from Chenkalady to Pullumalai. Attention is paid to improve the reconstruction of infrastructure facilities as a prelude to resettlement of people. The Ministries of Resettlement and Disaster Management take these measures.
