Cabinet has approved a proposal to lay an undersea electricity transmission line between Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and Talaimannar which would meet the country’s entire demand for electricity by 2015, Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said today.

The proposal was put forward by Power and Energy Minister John Seneviratna ad Cabinet gave the go head for the Minister to sign the relevant agreements with the Indian Government with regards to this project, the Minister told reporters.

On the Indian side, the undersea cable will be connected to the southern grid at Madurai through an overhead transmission line. On the Sri Lanka side, the underwater cable will be linked to that country’s network at Anuradhapura through an overhead line.
