Ready to head the commission, if no interference

Former Indian Chief Justice PN Bagawathie said he would head the independent commission only if he gets a free hand.

President Mahinda Rajapakse has decided to appoint a global body of jurors to inquire into the human rights violation in Sri Lanka and the government made a request to the former chief justice of India PN Bagawathie, 84 years to head of the commission. The most respected and famous chief justice of Indian Supreme Court from 1985-1986 said, if there is interference I would throw and leave the commission. I have to keep my reputation and to keep my conscience, he said in an interview.

He became a Judge of the High Court in 1960 and the judge of Supreme Court in 1973. He has also served in the UN Human Rights Committee.
