UNP candidates who contested the Colombo Municipal Council under the ‘spectacle’ symbol at the 2006 municipal poll are seeking a writ application from Supreme Court to stop the functioning of Colombo Municipal Council which they say is functioning illegally.

Former Deputy Mayor Asath Sally who was among the candidates said they would file the writ application immediately after the Vesak holidays.

He said the group was seeking a Court order for the dissolution of the council as the one-man Commission appointed to inquire into the activities of the council had found the council guilty of charges made against it.

“We decided to take this action as the commission report is lying idle and no action had been taken against the council” he said.

He also charged that illegal hoardings were coming up in the city under the new Municipal Commissioner.

Mr. Sally said VIPs were attempting to takeover certain institutions and functions which did not come under their preview. He said this had been the case with the Eastern Provincial polls where several ministers made similar blunders.

He accused the government of harassing Muslims and not giving them what they deserve, as in the case of the appointment of the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province. “No other government has been so communal minded as this one” he said.
