President Mahinda Rajapakse says terrorism must be defeated militarily and a political solution found to the issues of Tamils.
At a discussion yesterday with the heads of media institutions the president stressed that terrorism should be responded in a like manner.
He said the aim of the government is to hold the local government election of the eastern province as soon as possible and hand over the administration of the area to its people.
He also said a special procedure will be adopted to rehabilitate LTTE child recruits. The president stated that measures have been taken to set up a separate judicial system for children.
In reply to a query, president Rajapakse said a ceasefire agreement was a document that had neither the approval of the then cabinet or president. Speaking further the president said cordiality should be enhanced between the media and the police.
He noted that certain media exaggerate minor shortcomings of the police and do not give due prominence to terrorist atrocities. The president added that wide public appreciation has been expressed on the government’s eastern development drive.
